So, it's a new year and what is happening in music?
Kindergarten is learning about "Tempo". How fast or slow is the music? We've been moving to the music, creating "fast/slow" poems, playing instruments and singing. 1st grade and 6th grade are learning about instruments and how they are put into different categories called instrumental families. In 2nd grade we are discussing the difference between singing and speaking and playing parts of songs on the xylophone using the notes DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO.
3rd - 5th grades continue to learn about composers, music, dance and music of various cultures in the Music Express Magazines.
5th grade is now doing a unit on rhythm and will be creating their own performances using notes and meter of 3/4 or 4/4.
7th and 8th are in the middle of their history units for the year. 7th grade is studying music of the Medieval, Baroque and Classical eras and will be creating games/puzzles within the next several weeks that have to do with Baroque music. 8th grade is reading about and listening to 20th century and romantic composers and will be doing reports on their favorite 21st century musicians. Look out 4th grade! We are presently working on treble clef notes but the recorders will be starting soon.
