Welcome Back

It's September and we are already moving, singing, playing instruments and learning a lot about music.
At this time the students in kindergarten and 1st grade are moving to the music and learning about steady beat and tempo. The 1st graders are already starting to learn how to read quarter notes and rests.
2nd - 4th grade are learning about rhythm - how to read notes, how to play those notes on percussion instruments and how to create their own rhythm patterns. We learn about a couple more notes each year. These students really seem to enjoy singing. The 4th graders are looking forward to playing recorders this year
5th and 6th grades are doing units on the voice and singing. The 5th grade is discovering how tricky it is to sing a song in 2 or 3 parts.
7th and 8th grade are also working on rhythm. 8th grade has moved on to rhythm complex patterns and will be moving on the rhythms in various meters. I am hoping to continue guitar with 8th grade and introduce guitar for our 7th grade students.

Keep Wednesday, December 9th free. The students in kindergarten - 5th grade will be presenting the winter concert. We will be having performances during the school day and the evening.

What's Happening -
What's happening in music? Presently the students in grades k-5th have just starting working on the spring concert which will be on Wednesday, May 20th. A big portion of the show will be the show, "Movin' in the Right Direction".
What's a digiridoo? Ask a 1st grader or a 6th grader, they may remember from our class about woodwind instruments. Students in 5th and 7th grades are presently studying composers. (5th grade - the 3 B's and 7th grade - medieval, renaissance and baroque periods). The 4th grade students are really excited about playing recorders and are doing a great job. Kindergarten just finished learning about the Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint Saens with a Carnival of the Animals parade. 2nd grade is in midst of a singing unit and 8th grade will be taking out the guitars again this week.
FYI: March is Music in Our Schools Month.
