THANK YOU!!! To all the staff that came out to the concert tonight,
To all the students that worked so hard to prepare,
To all the families and friends that came out to support our students.
It's a lot of work - but I can always look forward to an enthusiatic and energetic performance from the students and a lively crowd. Thank you OCS -

It's September and of course there is a lot going on in music.
There are activities for all students k-8 from the Music Express Magazines. We get a new edition every 2 months and I always look forward to seeing each new publication. There are featured composers, "Luigi's Baton", music inspired by various cultures, instrumental pieces for recorders and xylophones, drumming pieces, music for young children and a spotlight on some of our more contemporary music.

Happy June!
It may be the last couple of weeks, the concert is over, but there is still a lot going on in music. We had a "hee haw", foot stomping square dance class in 3rd grade. The students learned about partners, do si do, swing, left hand and right hand star, sashe circle left and circle right.
4th grade is still playing their recorders AND WHAT A LINE of students I get each week looking to try to earn yet another belt. 5th grade is learning about how to create chords and triads. 6th grade is taking a closer look at musical theatre with the musical "Oliver". Kindergarten is doing Carnival of the Animals (seeing the orchestra and having a "parade of animals). 1st and 7th grade are learning about Mozart. 2nd is doing readings, learning about composers and singing music from Music Express.

All I can say is, WOW!!!!!! Wonderful job OCS students. It's Wednesday, but our K-5 students and 6th and 7th grade readers brought "Saturday" to Oxford a couple days early. And how can we forget the drumming, singing, guitars and recorders from our 6th-8th grade students that went above and beyond to share their special talent for the concert.
Special thank yous - 6th-8th grade students who helped behind the scenes, the teachers (especially those who came back for tonight's concert), Mrs. Miller and OCS secretaries, our administration and all those who helped w/program covers, bringing the kids to the concert and coming out to support our performers.

Spring is here! What's happening in music this spring? WEDNESDAY, MAY 18th is the spring concert and the students in k-5 are working on songs from "It's Saturday". No special needs for dress - they can wear their "Saturday" clothes. Some of the 6th - 8th graders have volunteered to participate by being part of small instrumental, singing and reading groups as well as stage helpers.

IT'S SATURDAY!!!
No, not really but the children in grades k-5th grades will be singing about Saturday and all the wonderful things that go with it (watching cartoons, relaxing, doing chores:-)...........) for just a part of the spring concert.
Also at this time kindergarten is learning about singing and speaking and that there are higher and lower notes. They've been playing the Johnny 1 note song - will Johnny finally sing 2 notes or more? LOOK OUT.
The students continue to learn about notation (rhythm in 5th grade and notes on the staff for 4th and soon 6th), composers (the 3 B's, Baroque, Classical, Renaissance, Medieval, Romantic and 20th Century), form (what is a ballad? what is a cumulative song?...) and instruments (brass, percussion, strings and woodwinds and keyboards).
The 4th grade has just started playing recorders. They know 3 notes so far and will be playing songs with those 3 notes within the next couple weeks.
Our 8th grade is going to be collecting some information about 21st century musicians. What are they listening to? Why? What music will we be looking at 100 years from now? What will be said about the music in 2011 in 2111?

So, it's a new year and what is happening in music?
Kindergarten is learning about "Tempo". How fast or slow is the music? We've been moving to the music, creating "fast/slow" poems, playing instruments and singing. 1st grade and 6th grade are learning about instruments and how they are put into different categories called instrumental families. In 2nd grade we are discussing the difference between singing and speaking and playing parts of songs on the xylophone using the notes DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO.
3rd - 5th grades continue to learn about composers, music, dance and music of various cultures in the Music Express Magazines.
5th grade is now doing a unit on rhythm and will be creating their own performances using notes and meter of 3/4 or 4/4.
7th and 8th are in the middle of their history units for the year. 7th grade is studying music of the Medieval, Baroque and Classical eras and will be creating games/puzzles within the next several weeks that have to do with Baroque music. 8th grade is reading about and listening to 20th century and romantic composers and will be doing reports on their favorite 21st century musicians. Look out 4th grade! We are presently working on treble clef notes but the recorders will be starting soon.
