December 18th question
Who wrote the music for the Star Wars movies? Is it the same composer for the next movie? Does 8th grade know?
more than concerts
Yes, we spend a lot of time preparing for the concert - but, so much more is happening - from 8th grade presenting reports about careers to 7th grade guitars and history. We continue the year with all grades learning about music history, creating music, learning about instruments, terms, notes, chords, dynamics, voice parts, recorders, music theatre, just to mention a few.
concert thank you
Thank you Oxford Central School
students, staff, parents and community – for without you this would not be the
special event that it turns out to be every year. Have a wonderful Holiday Season. Peace, Love, and Joy be Yours.

SPRING CONCERT - THURSDAY??????
Save the date - OCS Spring concert will be THURSDAY!!!, May 26, 2016.
Music k-8
It's the end of October and A LOT is going on in music. K-5th grade students are already busy getting ready for the concert, singing and moving to the music. New to the winter concert this year- 4th grade will be playing recorders and 3rd and 5th grade will be singing in harmony. Still a lot to do - but I'm sure we'll all enjoy Wednesday, December 2nd.
6th grade was showing off their knowledge of vocabulary that they learned since the beginning of the year by writing a story using terms they've learned in music class this year as well as special characters - "Cymbal Mouse", wood block and a metronome.
7th grade will be moving on to guitars; however, they really enjoyed taking a look at drums - what's a paradiddle?????
8th grade has finished their rhythm complex performances and is moving on to music careers.

Welcome Back
Welcome back!!! It was great to see some 5th - 8th grade parents the other night at Back to School Night and to talk about classes lessons and what's going on in music.
Some things to look out for: The letter for music lessons was in the Friday bulletin last week. The sign up form should be available in the school back pack soon. If you need a hard copy write me an e-mail or have your son/daughter ask for one.
Also, look out for what's happening in music class. Throughout the year I do post about what we are learning about in class as well as concert info on this blog.

terms, times and today
Terms, Times and Today - 5th, 7th and 8th grades.
Our 5th grade has been learning about different vocal terms and can use those term correctly to describe music. Diction, round, Scat Singing, A cappella, harmony, unison, partner songs are just a handful of words we've been discussing.
7th grade studies early music. They are creating games to show knowledge of medieval, baroque and renaissance time periods in music and sharing them with their classmates. They come up with some tough questions. Soon we will be studying the classical time period and Mozart.
8th grade - I let them tell me what's 21st music. They have completed their reports and will be presenting them to the class over the next couple weeks.
AND TODAY - MARK YOUR CALENDARS - our concert is late this year - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10th. It's all about America and American music.

what's up
Guitar tuna - what? Guitar students are loving not just the tuning part of the app but also the chord challenge. If your son/daughter plays guitar - see how many chords they can play in the given time - the record - 40.
A noun is a person place or thing, 3 is the magic number, circulation...... while I'm not involved with the play - I love hearing the OCS students singing outside the music class. I hear School House Rock will be coming to OCS this March - Look Out!
Students in grades 6-8 had a great time at the arts presentation at the high school a few weeks ago. Students who were in the play, taking music lessons, singers and part of AVA were at the high school to see the arts programs offered there. They heard the marching band, concert band, and choir. They also saw a part of the theatre production of Harvey. I know the students REALLY enjoyed the breakout session which involved playing with the band, singing with the choir, doing art projects and joining the drama club with some acting activities.

RED, WHITE and BLUE
They are the only colors I can think of for the Spring Concert this year. The theme - "Let's Sing, America!" - a compilation of music "Celebrating Our Dreams, Our Symbols and Our Freedom" by John Jacobson, Moses Hogan, Emily Crocker, Audrey Snyder, Cristi Miller, Mac Huff and Tom Anderson. And of course other songs reflecting American music and Patriotism. More info coming soon!
